Dear Parents,

NEWSLETTER NUMBER 1

I hope you all managed to have an enjoyable summer break and are looking forward to the year ahead.  Please accept my thanks for all of the messages of best wishes and good luck that I have received and for the very warm welcome both from children and parents – it is great to finally be in the chair!

A THANK YOU FROM MR OAKLEY

“I would like to formally thank you all for your gifts and extremely kind words at the end of last term. I enjoyed reading all the goodwill messages in the numerous cards received and I was particularly touched by the generosity of all members of the school community.

Hopefully, like me, you all had a relaxing summer break. At the time of reading this I will probably be poolside in Turkey! My sincere best wishes for the years ahead and no doubt opportunities will arise for us to meet in the future.”

I wish Mr Oakley success in all of his future ventures and add my thanks for his support and encouragement over the past year during my induction as new Headteacher.

A NEW ARRIVAL!

I am very happy to announce the arrival of Mrs Mitchell’s baby!  William Bryn Mitchell arrived on 22nd July 2008, and the family are happily settling into their new routines.  I am sure you all would like to add your congratulations to ours as we wish them a healthy, prosperous and happy future.

EXTERNAL AWARD

I am delighted to be able to inform you that our school has achieved the Healthy School’s Award.  A quote from the letter of accreditation states’

“It is clear that your school is committed to being a happy, healthy, caring school and that these aims are supported in the curriculum, extra-curricular and pastoral support offered.”

Special praise is offered to Mrs Mitchell for her co-ordination of the Healthy School’s work, but I would like to praise the whole school community. Achievement of the award is only possible with the full support and involvement of everyone involved with the school – children, parents, staff and governors included.

FIRST DAY CALLING SYSTEM AND CONTACTING SCHOOL

I am introducing a system of absence checking called ‘First Day Calling’ – when a child is absent and we have not received notification from parents on that day or in advance as to why they are absent we will undertake the following:

·  the register will be checked to identify an unreported absence

·  the office staff and class teacher will verify that the child is not in school and not simply late or elsewhere in the building

·  the office staff will call home to inform parents that the child is absent and we have not received notification

I trust you can appreciate that this is an important process in ensuring the safety and security of all children who attend Knaphill School, and urge you to contact us either in advance of an absence or on the day of absence by 9.30 am.

I am also in the process of obtaining quotes to upgrade the office system to allow absence messages to be recorded by telephone, as the school office does not open until 8.35am.

PTA DONATIONS AND EVENTS

During the course of 2007 / 2008 the PTA made very significant contributions to both of the Knaphill Schools – details of which are contained in a separate PTA newsletter.  We are very grateful to the PTA for their efforts and to those of you who have supported them. The figure for the contribution solely to ourselves is somewhere approaching £6000 – for which the school is immensely grateful.

Knaphill Schools PTA Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday 23rd September at the revised time of 8.00pm at Knaphill Lower School.  Please try to attend if you feel you are able to help out with the PTA this year, especially if you are able to become elected to the committee.  With the current Chair, Secretary and two further members stepping down after their successful periods in office the PTA is very keen to attract new members.

Knaphill Schools PTA Christmas Fayre will take place on 22nd November and we look forward to seeing as many families attending as possible.  Again contact the PTA if you are able to offer any help in any capacity with the organisation or running of the Fayre.

Knaphill Schools PTA Football Training starts again on Saturday 13 September at 9.30am.  This school year there are 6 parent helpers who will run the training. It will run throughout the school year in term time on the Junior School playing field with access for parents via the Knaphill Lower School main entrance gate and the gate to the field from Sussex Gardens recreation park.  Again, it is aimed at all pupils boys and girls from reception year through to year 6.  It will cost £1.50 per session and all children need to bring some water.  Information will appear on the notice boards shortly with contact details.

DRIVING AND PARKING NEAR THE SCHOOL SITE

Please exercise care and extreme caution when driving or parking near to the school site.  As you are aware access and parking around the school is limited and we would hope to avoid any problems arising either as a result of inattention or careless parking.  Woking Youth Arts Centre car park is not to be used for parent parking and parents should not obstruct the entrance to the Arts centre car park in any way at any time.

ADMISSION TO SECONDAY SCHOOL SEPTEMBER 2009 (Year 6 pupils)

Year 6 parents will receive on 15th September, via their child, information concerning applications for secondary school places in September 2009. Information will also be available on the Surrey County Council website www.surreycc.gov.uk/admissions and parents may apply on-line if they wish.

·  All parents need to complete the Surrey LA (Local Authority) paper application form or an on-line form.

·  There are different arrangements for those seeking out of county placements.

·  The Surrey LA paper application form needs to be returned to us.

·  The on-line form will go directly to the LA.

·  Please read the information booklet very carefully before completing the form.

·  Take careful note of the closing date for all applications – 24th October 2008

Admission authorities will only give consideration to a change of preference notified to them before 30th November where there has been a house move, or other significant circumstances, which make the original preference no longer practical; provided there is documentary evidence to support this. Any requests for changes received after 30th November will not be considered for initial allocation on 27th February 2009 but will be taken into account for the waiting list process. Notification letters for Secondary school places will be sent to parents after 27th February 2009.

FUNDRAISING EVENT REPORT

On 27th July 2008 children from Knaphill School volunteered to be ball boys and ball girls for a charity football match between Woking Referee’s Society and Guildford and Farnham Referee’s Societies.  The game was played at Woking F.C and over £2500 was raised which is to be shared between the charities Georgie’s Fund and Childline.  The final score was 3-1 to Woking R.S with Mr. Green managing to get one of the goals!  The children were Alexander Brown, Alex Bance, Ben McAlister, Laurence Wakeford from 6J, and Harry Moore, Max Chew, Joshua Caesar, Jake Elford and Harrison Bray from 6G.  Alex Smith, Lauren Cowl, Chloe Hobbs and Stephanie Hammill, who have recently left the school, also took part.   Mr Green would like to offer a big thank you to all of the children and their parents who came to watch the game and support the cause.

CLASS ASSEMBLIES

We enjoy the company of parents at class assemblies involving their child; it provides the class with an adult audience and gives the children additional encouragement. They usually start at 8.50 am, so if you have the time please come and join us.

Could I ask those of you who bring small children to sit on the end of a row so that a speedy exit from the hall can be made should you have a child causing a distraction? We appreciate your desire to see class assemblies but noise from the audience is off-putting for the performers, can spoil it for other parents and detract from what is going on in the hall. Also, if you have a mobile phone could you please ensure that it is switched off.

‘USE OF CAMERA AND VIDEO’ CODE

Parents and carers are reminded that they attend school events at the invitation of the Headteacher and Governors who decide the conditions that apply in order that the children are kept safe and that functions are not disrupted and staff and children are not distracted. Parents and carers can use photographs and videos taken at school events for their own personal use only. Such photographs or videos cannot be sold and must not be put on the web/internet due to existing data protection legislation, which in such circumstances is likely to be contravened. Recording or photographing other than for private use would require the consent of all the other parents whose children may be included in the images.

RESIDENTIAL VISIT MEETINGS

I very much hope that all children will be able to take part in one of our residential visits this year, as I believe it is an excellent means of helping to build independence and resilience, and contributes an extra dimension to the taught curriculum throughout the school.  We have information sessions booked for each of the different year groups which take up about half an hour of your time and give you a flavour for the variety of places visited.  If you are interested please come along:

Year 3 meeting takes place on Tuesday 30th September at 6.00 pm in the school hall.

Year 4 meeting takes place on Tuesday 7th October at 5.45 pm in the school hall.

Year 5 meeting takes place on Tuesday 30th September at 5.15 pm in the school hall.

Year 6 meeting takes place on Tuesday 7th October at 6.30 in the school hall.

HARVEST FESTIVAL – FRIDAY 10th  OCTOBER

We are planning to hold our Harvest Festival on Friday, 10 October at 8.55am. Each year group will be contributing to this in some way. This year parents may contribute to our Harvest Festival in the following two ways.  Donated items of food will be given to the Woking Lions Club Caring Christmas Campaign. Could you please ensure that any items that you forward are in date for, at the very least, the Christmas period. There will also be a collection (at the hall doors) on the day for those of you who may wish to contribute to Food Aid.  Money raised by Food Aid goes directly to food programmes in 28 countries worldwide, helping to change lives forever.

In order to make this an eventful occasion we would ask you to send all foodstuffs to class teachers on Wednesday, 8th  October for our display. Seats are limited and a large number of you may have to stand around the perimeter of the hall in order for us to accommodate all those wishing to attend.

TOE BY TOE

Mrs. McLean is keen to hear from parents who could spare some time supporting individual pupils as they progress through ‘Toe By Toe’ which is a programmed learning booklet, she is especially keen to hear from any parents who were involved last year and would like to continue this year.

SAINSBURY’S ACTIVE KIDS VOUCHERS
Over 45,000 Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers were collected last term and they have been used to order some of the following items :

Gymnastics mats        Football goals                          Netball posts               Tennis/Badminton nets
Football Kit

Multi-purpose sports kit           Playground Equipment toys and games.

Cooking equipment

Thanks to all who contributed to this invaluable means of providing equipment for school.

YEAR 5 FOOTBALL TEAM SUCCESS

Last year, the year 5 football team won their league on goal difference from West Byfleet.  Some of our results included a 4-2 win over Pyrford School and a 2-1 win over Westfield School.  Congratulations to all the boys who represented the Year 5 last season.  A special mention goes to Harry Chew, George Shannon and Matthew Burt who have since been selected for the Woking District Schools Football Squad for the upcoming season.
